“A Matcha Gift at Toka Ebisu” — What “Kinsei” Means, and Why This Matcha Feels So Rare

In 2026, I visited Toka Ebisu Shrine in Fukuoka to pray for business prosperity. During the New Year festival (held annually from January 8 to 11), many visitors come to offer prayers, and lucky draws are also part of the tradition. By a wonderful stroke of luck, I received a prize: “Kinsei” matcha.

In that moment, I couldn’t help but feel—“Perhaps the gods truly know that PJI is devoted to the matcha business.”Of course, that is simply my personal interpretation, but it made my gratitude even deeper.

What does “Kinsei” mean?

The word “Kinsei” (謹製) essentially means “made with sincere care and respect”, and is commonly used by makers to indicate that a product has been prepared attentively and thoughtfully. It carries a quiet message: this is not ordinary—this is something carefully crafted.

And when matcha is offered as a shrine “Kinsei” gift, it is often available only in limited quantities—making it a truly once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

With renewed gratitude, PJI will continue working closely with our producers and delivering matcha with sincerity and care.

We sincerely wish you prosperity and good fortune in the year ahead.
